Kieran Moloney Musical Instruments
The premises at 17 High Street,Galway was first opened as a specialist violin shop 'Galway Violins' in 1984 by Luthier Kevin Sykes.Since then the range of stock has expanded but the focus remains on high quality instruments for sale and dedicated repair service.
Kieran's career with musical instruments started after finishing secondary school in 1985, his third level education was at the London College of Furniture (now amalgamated into the London Metropolitan University) where he studied a full time diploma in musical instrument technology,specialising in woodwind instrument construction and design.
In 1989 he was offered an apprenticeship with Tom Cussen at Clareen Banjos, where he gained hands on experience in instrument making and developed a flair for inlaying and engraving.
In 1993 he moved to California USA, and worked for a Musical Instruments distributor in the receiving, quality control and instrument set-up departments. Joining the Northern California Association of Luthiers meant weekends spent at monthly seminars and meetings of NCAL where he met with, and spent time in the workshops of some of the leading Guitar builders in the USA.
Eighteen months later he moved back to Ireland and began to work under violin maker Kevin Sykes in High Street,Galway. Kevin moved his main workshop to Ballyvarry Co. Mayo in 1996.
At that point Kieran stayed on at the High Street premises and established his current business.
Customers range from beginners to well known professionals across all genres of music who are based localy,around Ireland and across the world.Apart from individuals,bands and ensembles,colleges and schools are also catered for with discounted educational rates on equipment and repairs.
The Moloney family has been involved with music going back to Kierans Great-Grandfather; piper and opera singer James; Grandfather Stephen,one of the founders of the Balinakill ceili band from County Galway-the first ever ceili band to be broadcast on radio in 1929 .His passion for music was instilled by his father Eddie and older brother Sean,both distinguished on flute and fiddle.
Paul Doyle has been making high-quality, hand-crafted musical instruments for over 30 years. Based in Galway City in the West of Ireland, Paul specialises in creating his individual styles of harps, guitars, mandolins, bouzoukis, mandolas (among others) for customers throughout the world.

On an old Franciscan Monastery in Roundstone, developed by the Industrial Development Authority , Malachy Kearns, better known as Malachy Bodhrán amongst folk musicians, works at his craft of making Ireland's oldest product the Bodhrán (Bow-Rawn). It is an 18" one sided drum made from Goatskin treated by a traditional process.
Shop at the old MonasteryGoatskin has unique stretch properties. The Irish word 'Bodhar' means deaf or haunting. The Bodhrán began as a skin tray used for drawing turf (peat) on the bogs.It stirs the spirit when played with the "tipper" or beater hitting the skin in a racing style while a hand presses the back of the skin to vary the tone. Malachy is respected as a fine Bodhrán makers for 25 years.Most of the professional folk Musicians world wide use our Bodhráns we are the only full time makers in the world.
